The Chester Town Crier at work

A bright future for Chester station

15 November 2007

Work has begun on a key project to regenerate Chester station and its surrounding area.
The installation of an architectural lighting scheme started this week to enhance the facade of the train station.

The lighting is part of a wider regeneration project to repair and improve the station complex and its surroundings making it a key gateway into the city and enhance other historically important buildings along Brook Street and City Road.

The work is expected to be completed in 6 weeks and will be officially unveiled at the end of January 2007.

Councillor Ann Farrell, portfolio-holder for culture explained "The lighting that is being installed at the station will create a brighter environment, improve public safety after dark and highlight the architectural detail of an important grade II* listed building."

The programme is being funded by English Heritage Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas and delivered by the Gateway Partnership which includes Arriva Trains Wales, Network Rail, Chester City Council, Cheshire County Council, Railway Heritage Trust, Merseyrail, Merseytravel, Visit Chester & Cheshire, Virgin Trains and the North West Development Agency
