Riverside Promenade Arch 45
13 March 2007
Work is well underway on one of the final links of Chester City Council's Riverside Promenade as workers prepare to demolish a wall in a railway arch that lies in the way of a near continuous footpath and cycle route from The Groves to the Old Port and beyond into Flintshire.
Development Portfolio Holder for Chester City council, Councillor Jim Latham said, "This is a symbolic moment for city councillors and officers and all those involved who have worked on this project for over 15 years.
Breaking down the wall in arch 45 will open up a beautiful stretch of the River Dee that is already designated as a site of special scientific interest and a special area of conservation.
The public access created along the Riverside Promenade is also a traffic-free route for commuters into Chester city centre and an excellent route for young people travelling to college and school to and from Handbridge."
The work on arch 45 is due to be completed at the end of March 2007 and will open soon after.
Residents and visitors will be able to experience new views of the Grosvenor Bridge, the Roodee racecourse, the Old Port, Crane Wharf and Cop Park.
The city council hopes to develop the network of riverside routes to the south of the city including better access across the Dee.
The Riverside Promenade has been made possible through European funding from the Water in Historic City Centres programme, Chester City Council, the North West Development Agency, the Sustrans cycle network, government regeneration funds, Waste Recycling Ltd, the Environment Agency and the county council.
